New Year’s Eve Mixed Drinks and Party Ideas

 December 17, 2022 3 Minute Read

When it comes to ringing in the New Year, there’s no drink more fitting than a champagne cocktail, but with so many options, how do you choose the right one? Let’s go over some of the basics, including the difference between champagne and sparkling wine, as well as a few of our favorite champagne cocktail recipes for your New Year’s Eve party.

Champagne vs. Sparkling Wine

Is sparkling wine champagne? Don’t be fooled by the bubbles; there’s a reason the two have different labels. Though both “pop” when uncorked, Champagne comes from the Champagne region in France and can only be made using Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. This means that though all champagne is sparkling wine, not all sparkling wine is champagne.

Champagne Sweetness Guide

Do you prefer your champagne drink to be sweet or dry? Here’s a helpful chart for deciding which bottle to get when mixing your New Year’s Eve drinks:

  • Brut nature: Dry with 0-3g/L residual sugar
  • Extra brut: Dry with 0-6g/L residual sugar
  • Brut: Dry with a hint of sweetness. 0-12g/L residual sugar
  • Extra sec or Dry: Noticeably sweet with 17-32g/L residual sugar
  • Demi-sec: Sweet with 32-50g/L residual sugar
  • Doux: Very sweet with 50g/L residual sugar or more
