Frequently Asked Questions
  • A prior authorization is when an insurance plan has a specific set of conditions or criteria for coverage of a medication or procedure. When a medication requires prior authorization, the pharmacy alerts the prescriber that the prior authorization is required, and the prescriber submits information from the patient’s medical history to support approval of the medication. The insurance plan then approves or denies coverage of the medication.

  • When the pharmacy processed your prescription, they are alerted if the medication requires prior authorization. The patient does not have to do anything to get this resolved - the pharmacy will let the prescriber know. Prior authorizations usually take at least 48 hours.

  • Each manufacturer maintains eligibility criteria for each of their programs. You can find their terms and conditions on their website, which are linked above. When you sign up for a manufacturer program, the manufacturer will ask questions to make sure you are eligible.
